Goldheart Woodworking

Project and shop journal

Workbench

I put “woodworking vise” on my Christmas wish list last year, and both my dad and brother in law generously delivered. So of course I needed to build a workbench to hold my two new vises.

I wanted something cheap and easy to build, so I spent an evening at the Home Depot sifting through their entire bin of 2×4 studs and selecting the 20 best ones I could find–which were actually pretty good. I ran them over my little 4″ craftsman jointer to flatten the faces a bit and improve the gluing surfaces, then laminated all 20 together in my biggest glue-up yet.

After that I built some guides and a router sled and surfaced it down to decently flat, installed my vises, built some legs out of scrap lumber, and finished it in Danish Oil for some glue-drip resistance. I built the bench the same height as my table saw so it could double as an outfeed table.
