After I got a thickness planer, I realized I needed some way to collect all of the chips it puts out. I found a good deal on a used Harbor Freight dust collector and brought it home, but my toddler hated how loud it was. So the dust collector closet idea was born, and I built out a little tumor of a shed on the side of the garage, insulated with old carpet. I opted for a dust deputy cyclone separator and a huge canister filter, although I’ve since stopped using the filter, as the cyclone gets nearly everything and the rest goes outside to harmlessly settle in the empty field next door.
Inside the shop, I ran 4″ PVC drainage line with 45 degree elbows and wyes, and blast gates for each inlet, with all joints sealed with foil tape.
