I asked my son if I should make him something out of wood for Christmas, and he immediately replied “another Wooden Boat, but this time a catamaran.” “Wooden Boat” is his official proper name for his wooden boat bath toy that I made him for his first birthday, which has continued to be a staple of bathtime fun. So here’s Wooden Catamaran, his newest bath toy.
I had enough left over from the first wooden boat’s block of poplar to make the second one–so they get to be boat siblings. This second boat project was something of a woodworking redemption for me, with better tools and much improved skills. This time I used my 14″ bandsaw to cut out the hulls, and my oscillating belt sander to shape them.

This time, the first float test was a resounding success–I made the sterns a little big to balance the weight of the mast.

After 5 coats of spar varnish, my wife sewed a sail out of leftover sleeping bag fabric and I stitched in a piece of plastic canvas to make the trampoline. And now wooden boat and wooden catamaran share the load of hauling the other bathtime toys.
